Metal prices are up. Natural gas and crude oil prices are up. Are these short-term disruptions, or are we looking at long-term trends? It depends on the underlying causes. If the main causes are supply shortages, it is just a matter of time before economic forces correct these imbalances. When sudden shortages cause prices to shoot upward, suppliers generally respond by finding ways to increase output to take advantage of the higher prices; new suppliers enter the market; or imports increase. Eventually supplies increase sufficiently and prices drop.
