Earlier this year I went to an orientation at my son's high school. Each teacher had a few minutes to discuss their plans for the semester, and my son's science teacher slipped in a tidbit about the importance of science education: In 2005 China surpassed the U.S. in awarding engineering degrees to university students. This doesn't come as a surprise. China's population is about four times the size of the U.S.'s, so you would expect that it would produce four times as many engineering graduates, right? What does surprise me is that the U.S. seems to ignore this statistic. I don't recall this making the news. Do you? We rant and rave about currency manipulation and low-cost manufactured goods from China, but do we pay attention to other events? Apparently not.
