It's called the Windy City, but as far as its weather is concerned, it really is no more windy than any other city along Lake Michigan. The moniker likely is a derogatory term that grew out of Chicago's rivalry with Cincinnati. It sounds quaint now, but in the late 19th century these two cities claimed leadership in the meatpacking industry. Hey, don't laugh--this is how the Green Bay Packers football team got its name. That wasn't the only point of contention. Baseball games were a flash point in the early 20th century when the Chicago White Stockings and Cincinnati Red Stockings were regional adversaries. Chicagoans were said to be full of bluster according to the folks of Cincinnati. The Chicago-Cincinnati rivalry isn't the only possible reason for the nickname. It may have stemmed from its inhabitants' relentless bragging in playing up the city's attributes in the late 19th century. Chicago was one of several candidates that vied to host the World's Fair in 1893, and, well, the only way to promote a city is to promote it. Even today the city has quite a bit to brag about. It claims to be the home of the world's largest commercial office building, indoor marine mammal exhibit, aquarium, illuminated fountain, public library, free public zoo, food festival, modern art museum, and convention facility. And this convention facility, McCormick Place, is the venue for the FABTECH~R International & AWS Welding Show this year.
