Quite a few gadgets, gizmos, and widgets (often formally called "technological breakthroughs") have been in the news in the past few months. Of course, some flashy new products aren't based on new technologies. Some use old technologies in new combinations; some take advantage of other technologies; and some new products are dazzling and successful simply because the designers threw out the rules and started from scratch. Regardless of how a product has changed, a quick look back usually shows how much technologies have changed. Portable music players are a good example. Transistor radios gave way to small cassette players, which led to today's digital music players. All of these play music, yet they also reflect other changes.
