Thermatool Corp (East Haven, CT) would like to provide tube and pipe manufacturers with some basic tips on weld zone setup to maximize efficiency of their mills. It is not uncommon for even the most experienced tube and pipe producers to consume more energy than is required with the high frequency (HF) induction or contact welding process. By adhering to several key setup parameters, one can weld with less power and save money. Some operators may find it more convenient to utilize one work coil for a wide range of tube sizes. The electrical consumption can be minimized by using a coil with an inner diameter that is roughly 20 percent larger than the tube's outer diameter. The distance from the apex of the weld to the closest wrap of the coil should not exceed the length of the tube's outer diameter if possible. It is suggested that the coil is placed as close to the weld rolls as possible. Operators should ensure that all multi-turn coil's first turn (or wrap) covers the top of the V closest to the weld rolls.
