I have a theory that after any new mode of transportation is invented, it's not very long (maybe a minute) before someone says, "I wonder how fast this thing can go." And, given our competitive nature, it's just a little while longer (another minute) until someone says, "If we had two, we could race them." After that, it's just a matter of finding a track, a timer, and a flagman. The first six land speed records were set by electric cars. That might sound quaint, but this was around the turn of the century, when driving at 35 miles per hour (MPH) was a thrill and 49.93 MPH was enough to set a record.
