Laser welding on tube mills has become a popular subject in the industry. This article is based on the experiences of Rath Manufacturing, a stainless steel tube manufacturer that introduced two laser mills to its operation in the late 1990s.The laser excites gases using flow and an electric charge to make the gas emit a wavelength of light that contains the energy to perform the work (see Figure 1). The company's 6-kilowatt laser requires 70 kilowatts or 100-amp service at 480 volts. In a transverse flow system, gas is swirled around in the cavity past charged plates, where the gas is excited. The unit uses three gases, which must be 99.99 percent pure, in the cavity-nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and helium.
