Space CAM, Mazak Nissho Iwai Corp.'s new CAD/CAM software for the 2-D/3-D Space Gear laser, can automatically design and generate NC code for a sheet metal fixture that can support a 3-D part and anchor it to the cutting table. The company says this technology allows quick setup for laser processing of 3-D parts, even in short runs.From a CAD file, the software generates in three to five min. NC code for the slot-and-tab interlocking crosspieces of the workholding fixture. To anchor the fixture, operators fit these pieces into slots in a base plate that they pre-position on the laser bed.
