Mark Desjardins, Cotterman Co.'s assistant manufacturing engineering manager, wanted to reduce equipment setup time and in-process inventory. The company, a manufacturer of rolling warehouse ladders, was accustomed to storing large amounts of in-process inventory because setup on many of the machines was time-consuming. Running large batches meant that it stored extensive amounts of cut and bent parts, including parts for some products built just four or five times a year.
