On 21 June 2012 at about 6:30 a.m. while photographing Tree Swallows from the boardwalk near the entrance to the Great Egret Trail in Horicon NWR, I heard a loud ruckus coming from the marsh. In the open water in front of cattails were two Pied-billed Grebes fighting (Fig. 1). It was hard to believe that these two small water birds were capable of creating such clamorous, sounds and commotion (Fig. 2). At times they stood straight up in the water (Fig. 3) with their crown feathers raised and their necks enlarged. With water splashing everywhere, the grebes attempted to push one another under the water (Fig. 4). They jabbed at each other with their bills, biting at the neck (Fig. 5) when possible.
