Zheng Xiaoyu, the former head of China's State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), has been sentenced to death for taking bribes while in office to approve pharmaceuticals and medical devices. According to the official government news agency, six types of medicine approved by the administration during Mr Zheng's period in office were fake. The court said his actions "greatly undermined... the efficiency of China's drug monitoring and supervision, endangered public life and health and had a very negative social impact.
