At the writing of this article on August 16,2012, it is the estimation of many in the industry that this year's crop will be the highest tonnage crop of the last five years (2007 - 2011). The expected increase in yields is a combination of height, population, and more acres of plant-cane this year. For most of the industry, rains have been timely, resulting in a very tall crop. Growth measurements from the AgCenter's Iberia Station, Jeanerette, and the USDA's Ardoyne Farm, Houma, indicate that this year's crop growth is a month or more ahead of average. With a mild winter and a relatively dry spring, thick populations were established early in both the plant-cane and stubble crops. The planting season for 2011 was almost ideal and growers in many cases were able to plant more than their normal rotation of acreage in an effort to make up for some of the previous years' inadequate plantings and to replace some of the damage resulting from the cold wet winter of 2010.
