In the last issue of Timber Harvesting, Jennifer McCary addressed a number of trucking issues, including weight restrictions. Trucking is a major component of most logging operations, and a successful logging side is doomed to fail if the trucking armgoes lacking. One key trucking component is maximizing cargo weight while avoiding overweight fines. Many states have certain weight exemptions for haulers of unprocessed agricultural and forest products. Unfortunately, most of these exemptions are notvalid on the interstate system, meaning that log trucks often travel longer distances through more congested areas to get logs to a mill. This doesn't make any sense, considering that the interstate system is engineered to handle the mind-boggling weights of military equipment, including tanks and such.
