Barkley Timber Services, based in Linden, Ala., has been marking timber for land management companies, loggers and private landowners in southwest Alabama and neighboring Mississippi since 1989. Owner Jack Barkley thinks of himself as a partner with nature and he has learned to read it like a book. "Three things figure into the equation--quality of seedling, quality of soil and quality of planting," states Barkley. " I've figured out that Mother Nature puts one quality tree in every available growingspace. It varies based on those three conditions, but she determines which trees will grow straighter, healthier and hardier than everything else around it, and if you're not growing that tree, you're missing the boat."
