Bite injury in the neck in dogs. Retrospective study on extent, diagnostic and therapy options.

The study was conducted to diagnose and treat bite wounds on the neck of dogs. Retrospective evaluation of 47 bite wounds in 45 dogs presented between January 2000 and August 2007 in the Clinic for Small Animals, Department of Surgery of the Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen, Germany were used in the study. Results revealed that 38 animals with injuries on the skin and subcutaneous tissue were presented within 24 h after injury. 10 dogs had additional injuries to the muscles, trachea, oesophagus, larynx or spinal cord. Nine dogs were presented after 24 h or later. Four dogs had developed abscess. Severe injuries like avulsion of the trachea were also observed in patients presented later. Radiographic signs comprised radiolucency in the neck (n=25/46.3%), soft tissue swelling (n=6/11.1%), pneumomediastinum (n=9/16.6%), pneumothorax(n=1/1.9%) and pneumoretroperitoneum (n=1/1.9%). The treatment time for severely injured dogs was 6.25 days. The dogs which were presented later than 24 h after trauma were treated longer with antimicrobial drugs (18.2 days) than the early presented dogs (8.6 days in case of skin and subcutis wounds, 9.6 days in severely injured patients). Bite injuries in the neck caused a 8.5% (n=4) mortality rate. Patients with perforation of the oesophagus died. It is concluded that bite injuries to the neck in dogs have a good prognosis when treated correctly. Radiographs may help localize injuries to the trachea, larynx or oesophagus. Extensive examination and treatment under anaesthesia must occur quickly.
