A variational approach to the solution of the linear equation problem (H - El)(2)x = y is described, and applied to the interior eigenvalue problem for a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian matrix. Test calculations using large basis sets for a two-dimensional Schodinger equation give promising results. [References: 15]
