Structural controls on gold mineralization and ore body dissection: Bjorkdal mine, Skellefte, northern Sweden

For over a decade Bjorkdal produced the highest annual tonnage of gold of any mine in Europe. Its Palaeo-Proterozoic ore deposits are hosted by shear-vein systems within grano-dioritic intrusive rocks and were complexly deformed and metamorphosed with surrounding volcanic-arc sequences during the Svecofennian orogeny. The economic potential of the mine relies, therefore, on accurate structural interpretations and three-dimensional models, which identify ore zone continuity and nearby satellite deposits. The authors have examined and mapped the structure in the open-pit and the surrounding region, logged more than 8000 m of drill core and conducted detailed SEM petrography. This has enabled them to identify structural controls on the mineralization process at micro- to mine-scale, and to characterize the kinematics and three-dimensional architecture of the ore deposits and the structures that deform them.The highest gold grades in the mine are coincident with steep, northeast-southwest-trending, meso-scale conjugate shear zones. In detail, gold mineralization is associated with microfractures in arrays of sub-vertical quartz veins within the shear zones. The echelon and conjugate arrangement of these veins, and the sense of vein rotation, mineral lineations and deflection of the contemporary shear-zone phyllonitic cleavages into spaced fabrics in the adjacent wallrocks consistently show the shear zones to be dip-slip extensional. Smaller-scale shear-sense indicators, some of which are associated with the gold-bearing microstructures, also indicate extensional kinematics. Gold mineralization was, therefore, syn-kinematic with development of these extensional shear zones.
