From the present investigation the following conclusions may be drawn.(1) The phosphorus content of the high-phosphorus manganese ores of southern Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, India, can be reduced to 0.15 percent or less by roasting the ores with 2-6 wt percent NaCl at 750-800 deg C followed by leaching in 0.5-0.75 M HNO_3 at 40-60 deg C for a period of 15-20 min.(2) The reaction between NaCl and phosphorus-bearing minerals at elevated temperature is rapid in the initial stage (15-30 min), but continues slowly to 120 min to reach the desired level of dephosphorization. The subsequent leaching process, however, is very rapid and is complete within 15-20 min at 40-60 deg C.(3) The critical parameters of this method of dephosphorization are the amount of NaCl, the temperature of roasting, the concentration of acid and the temperature of leaching. Optimum values of these parameters have been determined.
