The output of global car production in 2007 was 70.3 million vehicles, but this will clearly decrease in 2009 as it did in 2008, due to the downward production adjustment by automobile manufacturers in the current economic downturn. However, R&D activity centred on 'environmentally-friendly technology', 'high productivity' and 'cost reduction' by automotive-related industries is an ongoing challenge.
