Two sets of themed free seminars, plus one further presentation on the important topic of training, were held at Surfex Plus in a small lecture theatre attached to the exhibition hall. Many topics covered are of general interest and deserve the attention of a wider audience. I have therefore sought to summarise key aspects of the papers below, though those with a specific interest in any of the topics should of course contact the speaker or their company for further information. Relevant contact details can be found on the Surfex Plus website. It should be added that many papers were co-authored, but in this summary, only the speaker has been named. This review has been based primarily on the speakers' PowerPoint slides as time did not allow me to attend all the presentations, and apologies are offered in advance for any resulting errors, omissions or over-simplifications. The main seminar sessions were preceded by a presentation by Proskills, Hull College and the BCF. This set out the role of Proskills, as the Sector Skills Council, and how the BCF, as the industry trade body, will, in conjunction with Hull College, deliver the recently launched Coatings Operations Apprenticeship Training Programme, which has been specifically designed to meet the skills gaps and changing skills needs of the Coatings Industry. It is thought that by 2020, the number of jobs that require higher level (4+) skills in the coatings industry will double. The most frequently predicted future skills gaps are in technical areas, and will be driven by innovation in products and adoption of new technology. The seminar also highlighted other work that these partners are doing with employers to attract new talent.
