I suppose there is always something faintly miraculous about a 500-ton jumbo jet actually leaving the runway. Yes, I know, there are four very, very large jet engines screaming away, and yes, sure enough, it certainly does get up some speed as it lumbers down the tarmac, 60,000 gallons of aviation fuel lying either side of you in the wings, (a hidden threat which it is probably better not to think about just at that moment), but still, it all accelerates rather too slowly for my liking, and after what seems like an age, just when anxiety starts to rise, the vibration eases and the beast reluctantly rises up too, climbing, climbing into the night sky over London, somehow always managing to surprise you with the unexpectedly loud thump of the undercarriage doors closing, and banking ever-so-sedately southwards on its long voyage to Southern Africa.
