There are few things in life that are useful, essentially free, globally available, non-politically aligned and not controlled by big business. The Internet is one of them and it provides the wealth of information that has been termed the Information Superhighway. If you wanted to develop from scratch something like this it would be nigh on impossible. It exists because it has developed slowly and democratically while filling a niche that an increasing number of people wanted, taking advantage of developing technology and the desire for information.
