The study was conducted to determine the effect of melatonin on antioxidant enzymes including catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), glutathione reductase (GRd), and malondialdehyde (MDA), a lipid peroxidation marker, in erythrocytes of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). 40 fishes were grouped into control and melatonin groups. Blood samples were collected from both groups before and after melatonin treatment. Results showed that melatonin significantly increased CAT, POD, and GRd activities (P<0.05) of the treated fishes. However, MDA levels significantly decreased in the melatonin treatment group (P<0.01). It is suggested that melatonin decreases lipid peroxidation and increases the antioxidant enzymes activities.
