During Sept. of 2009 I had the distinct pleasure to be re-invited to tropical fruit tour Hainan Province (Island), China. One afternoon during our travel through the countryside in lychee native tree area we were suddenly careening down a narrow dirtroad with tall hedges on either side of the road. Unbeknownst to me, my gracious hosts had arranged for us to visit a very special nursery and farm. As we drove I could see feral and maybe wild lychee trees throughout the area, that along with small groves of lychee, mango, wampi (yes, wampi), guava, sugar apple, and banana. Suddenly we turned into a home nursery site with a large pink house and numerous small stature topworked trees, finished air-layers, and grafted seedlings surrounding the home/office complex (Photo 1).
