The study was conducted to evaluate the heat tolerance, physiological constants, of 32 dairy cows (Chinampo, n=12; Holstein, n=10 and Jersey, n=10) in an arid region of northwest Mexico. Rectal temperature and respiratory rate were recorded every Monday at 06:00 and 17:00 h between June and December 2006. Results revealed that the rectal temperature of Holstein was highly affected by heat, followed by Jersey and Chinampo (the most heat-resistant). Respiratory rate of the three breeds was affected by climatic factors, but the Holstein and Jersey cows registered higher values than Chinampo cows. The physiological variables of all three breeds increased with a temperature-humidity index (THI) of >72. The most heat accumulation during the day was registered in the dairy breeds. The difference in respiratory rate between morning and evening measurements were higher in Holstein and Jersey cows than in Chinampo cows. It is concluded that Chinampo cows are the most tolerant to heat stress.
