In temperate regions, the concentrations of potassium (K~+) and sodium (Na~+) in the soil solution are similar, and generally lie in the range 0.1-1.0 mM. However, although K~+ is an essential cation for cytoplasmic biochemistry, Na~+ is not. Indeed, Na~+ can be toxic by competing with K~+ in biochemical processes. Thus, it is necessary for plants to acquire K~+ and to exclude Na~+. This is achieved by selective transport across the plasma membrane (see the review article by Daniel Schachtman and Weihong Liu in this issue).
