摘要

Soon after the production of the first transgenic plants in the early 1980s, gene flow from genetically modified (GM) crops was recognized as a potential hazard. In much of the early literature, biologists concentrated on estimating the likelihood of gene flow to wild-crop relatives and speculated about the impacts on natural or semi-natural plant communities. However, recent reports from Canada of GM herbicide-tolerant volunteer weeds (which result from cross pollination between oilseed rape cultivars) and the furore in the UK over possible fertilization of organic maize by pollen from a field trial of transgenic maize, have brought the potential impacts of gene flow on agriculture into the limelight. Therefore the recent symposium on gene flow and agriculture, which brought together agronomists, plant breeders, environmentalists, regulators and research scientists to discuss current thinking about the affect of gene flow from transgenic crops on agriculture, was timely.
