When plants encounter pathogens, resistance mechanisms are activated that can prevent infection, aid recovery from disease and prevent future infection. An important component in a plant's defense arsenal is the pathogen-induced response called systemic acquired resistance (SAR), which when acivated can prevent infection by a wide range of pathogenes. SAR was described in 1961 by Frank Ross (Cornell University, USA) and later found by others to be associated with the induction of a suite of pathogenesis-related (PR) genes and their corresponding proteins.
