It is a cognate receptor that knows his own effector; ‘‘it is a wise father that knows his own child’’. The study of plant pathogen interactions is currently dominated by effectors [1] and as in all new areas of science this has generated its own vocabulary. Effectors are defined as molecules that are produced by pathogens or pests which affect or might affect the outcome of the interaction with the host. Effectors interact with host factors which can often be described as receptors. If a pathogen possesses many effectors, and they surely all do, and hosts possesses many receptors, then the specificity between effector and receptor has become conventionally described as the interaction between an effector and its ‘COGNATE’ receptor [2–4].
