摘要

In most species, the long distance transport of assimilates is in the form of sucrose. This process is driven by a concentration gradient between source and sink tissues. Sucrose cleavage steepens the gradient; therefore sucrolytic enzymes are thought to contribute to carbohydrate partitioning. Invertases catalyse the irreversible hydrolysis of sucrose. The different invertase isoenzymes can be distinguished on the basis of their intracellular location, isoelectric points and pH optima. Our current understanding of the diverse roles of invertases was discussed recently at the first meeting to be devoted entirely to this topic.
