摘要

The risks and benefits of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) continue to make headlines around the world like no other topic does. Several official reports on public opinions and perceptions have been published in recent years that show that consumers in the USA have comparably fewer concerns about transgenic food than Europeans do. Consequently, US farmers were willing to adopt the new technology, and the USA currently dominates the global genetically modified (GM) crop market. In Europe, the strong anti-GMO sentiment has led to almost total elimination of the use of ingredients derived from GM plants. The ongoing controversies in developed countries have, no doubt, affected the rate of applying GM technologies to crops such as rice, which are of vital importance to many developing economies of the world. However, few surveys have focused on how GM crops are actually perceived in developing countries. Costa Rica is now leading the way with a nationwide survey.
