Question: how do plants work? Answer: magnificently! I can look back now on a career of some 40 years and declare that I still find discovering more about how plants work to be both exciting and stimulating. I wish I could equally emphatically say that I always had a burning ambition to become a plant physiologist, but I can't. I staggered and stumbled, first, into botany, then, into plant physiology, a story that stands as a cautionary tale for those who imagine that careful career planning is essential. In 1957, I left school with high hopes of becoming a dentist but interviews at dental colleges convinced me, as well as my examiners, that I had minimal aptitude for the profession. This inauspicious beginning to my post-secondary career left me with no university prospects. Probably from a burning desire for me not to return to school for another year, my headmaster arranged an interview for me with the Professor of Botany, Meirion Thomas, at King's College, Newcastle-upon-Tyne (UK), then part of the University of Durham. At one point in the interview, Professor Thomas asked me why I wanted to become a botanist rather than a zoologist, a fair question that I had not at any point in my brief life considered.
