Steven Maere was born in Ghent, Belgium. With both of his parents being MDs and science enthusiasts, he grew up in a scientifically stimulating environment. He decided he wanted to become an explorer after he found a fossilized seahorse in his preschool sandbox that made the school newspaper. He studied engineering, physics (MSc 1999), and biotechnology (MSc 2001) at Ghent University and obtained a PhD in computational biology there in 2006. After a postdoctoral term shared between the laboratories of Yves Van de Peer in Ghent and Michael Eisen at the University of California, Berkeley, he returned to Ghent in 2009 to establish his own laboratory at the VIB/UGent Department of Plant Systems Biology, where he is currently a junior group leader and assistant professor. His current research interests include developing methods to extract useful information from large-scale functional genomics data sets, mathematically modeling biological processes, and studying the evolution of biological systems from a mechanistic perspective.
