Sophisticated roadside equipment and smart use of traffic signals are likely to play a big part in the transportation sector's efforts to address issues of climate change. Modern technology's ability to improve traffic flow will also significantly reduce vehicle emission levels, say those at the cutting edge of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). Work to increase understanding of how such systems can reduce emissions is being stepped up by a carbon working group established by ITS (UK). Members of the group have been drawn from transport technology specialists with a keen interest in environmental matters. Its chairman, Keith McCabe of Atkins, says the group will seek to provide advice to clients procuring transport projects and demonstrate to the wider transport industry how ITS can reduce emissions.
