My connection with Le Mans is not related to racing at all, but to the film Le Mans starring Steve McQueen. The 1970 racing season had been very difficult for me: the many mechanical failures at Team Lotus culminated in Jochen Rindt's fatal accident at Monza, and my replacement immediately afterward by Reine Wisell. A few weeks on a film set would be light relief - or so I thought. Andrew Ferguson (also ex-Team Lotus) had assembled a positive galaxy of proper race-car drivers to do the action shots. The cars, many of which were supplied by David Piper, consisted mainly of Porsche 917s, Lola T70s, Ferrari 512LMs, Porsche 911s and a Matra Prototype. For close-up action shots the camera car was a GT40 with the roof cut off and a huge rostrum camera mounted on a rotating platform fixed to the floor of the passenger's side. This meant two things: the butchered GT40 now had the chassis stiffness of well-cooked spaghetti, and the center-of-gravity height was dramatically raised. It also meant the poor cameraman sitting exposed way up high in the slipstream at 120mph (190km/h)-plus, and taking his chances should anything go wrong. A few runs driving this horrible device were enough for me because it handled like a wounded buffalo while McQueen in a 917 pretended to dice with it - in my case, through the Maison Blanche.
