Until now, the TPMS market has been dominated by direct TPMS, using pressure sensors mounted inside the tires to monitor tire pressures. In the USA, all new cars have been equipped with direct TPMS since the introduction of FMVSS 138 on September 1, 20 07. However, this is about to change. By applying state-of-the-art signal processing and sensor data fusion techniques to the tire pressure monitoring problem, Swedish NIRA Dynamics AB has developed an advanced indirect TPMS capable of detecting under-inflation in one to four tires simultaneously, and meeting the FMVSS 138 requirements applicable for the US market. This system, called TPI, is capable of delivering the same or better safety benefits as direct TPMS, while at the same time being simpler, easier to use, and more cost effective.
