The issue of whether or not endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are markers or triggers in any human disease remains controversial. Although no recent retrotransposition event has been described, the detection of a functional human ERV (HERV-K) reverse transcriptase indicates that some HERVs have retained the potential for retrotransposition. This is confirmed by the fact that integration sites are present only in the human lineage and, more convincingly, by the polymorphisms in the solitary long terminal repeats (LTRs) that are present or absent in the major histocompatability complex (MHC) haplotypes. There is evidence that these polymorphisms might predispose individuals towards certain diseases.
