Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a well-known opportunistic pathogen, being one of the leading causes of nosocomial infections and hospital-acquired pneumonia, and is infamous as the main organism responsible for the complications associated with cystic fibrosis (CF). Recently, a novel virulence-associated locus was identified using a Pseudomonas multihost system consisting of plants, nematodes and animals. Cao et al. [1] identified an ORF in this locus encoding a transcriptional regulator of the LysR family, which these authors renamed multiple virulence factor regulator (MvfR). MvfR positively regulates the expression of the phnAB operon (involved in the synthesis of pyocyanin, which contributes to R aeruginosa persistence in the lungs of CF patients) and controls the production of elastase, phospholipase and R aeruginosa autoinducer 1 (PAI1).
