Neurological complications following anaesthesia in animals are rare. However, Jurk et al. (2001) reported a cat with acute vision loss after anaesthesia, in which post-mortem examination revealed cerebrocortical necrosis consistent with hypoxia. A recent multicentre study described post-anaesthetic cortical blindness in 20 cats and identified mouth gags as a risk factor for this complication (Stiles et al. 2012). We report here a case of post-anaesthetic neurological deficits in a cat following the prolonged use of a mouth gag.
