Evaluation of some British potato varieties for keeping quality under natural storage conditions in Bangladesh

Storage quality of three sizes of tubers of eight British potato varieties in their second and third generations has been compared with a recommended variety, Diamant, of Dutch origin. Average weight loss of the British varieties due to dehydration was 19.00% in the second and 17.55% in the third-generation tubers. Loss was 18.16% and 20.55% respectively in the controls. Small tubers were found to suffer most from dehydration. Erwinia spp. and Fusarium spp. were identified as the cause of rot disease. Average loss of the British varieties due to rotting was 13.33% in the second and 8.75% in the third generation, compared with 10.0% and 16.67% in the controls. Rot was observed in Ailsa and Kingston in the second and Ailsa in the third-generation tubers. Maximum loss due to rot was observed in the larger tubers. Ailsa in the second and Ailsa, Kingston and Pentland Squire in the third generation were found to perform better than the controls for days to sprouting, 100% sprouting and shrivelling. For all these characters, larger tubers performed less well than the medium-sized and small tubers. Number of sprouts, sprout length and weight was lower in Ailsa, Kingston and Pentland Squire than in the controls, but were higher in larger tubers. Physical condition of tubers of the British varieties was better than the control in both generations. Larger and smaller tubers responded equally for this character. Among the British varieties, Kingston and Pentland Squire were very good, but the performance ofAilsa was excellent.
