The prolonged civil war in Mozambique led to famine in many parts of the country. Shrimp trawler by-catch thrown away at sea is a potential food source which needs to be utilized. By-catch is now being brought ashore from specially built or recommissioned boats, and is salted and sun dried. There is an unsatisfied demand for the product in both the coastal areas and inland.
