摘要

Statistics are often misused in field experimentation. The F test from the analysis of variance table, the least significant difference and Duncan's multiple range test if properly used can help give valid inferences from experimental data. An experiment should answer pertinent questions posed by the experimenter: a powerful way of answering these questions is by the use of contrasts, but this method has been largely ignored. Instances when statistical principles are best suited to give the required inferences are discussed.
