Yield responses of food crops to animal manure in semi-arid Kenya.

In field experiments in 1989-93 at 9 sites on the lower eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum]-green gram [Vigna radiata] and sorghum-cowpeas cropping systems were compared. Crops were grown in Apr. and Nov. Either the cereal crops followed the legumes or vice versa or cereal/legume intercrops were grown during both seasons. The crops received 0, 5 or 10 t goat manure/ha. Yield response to manure application was relatively greater in the cereals than the legumes. Yields and returns from the intercrops were greater than from the sole crops. The marginal yield gain with 10 t manure was substantially less than that from the 5 t rate, and the less popular sorghum-cowpea cropping system gave both higher yields and greater yield responses than the more widespread pearl millet-green gram cropping system. Results were not consistent across all the sites. Of the possible common factors of ecological zone, soil type, site history and soil phosphate status, only the last showed a close relationship, suggesting that available soil phosphate is a key limiting factor in crop production in that area.
