Leaves and tubers of 14 local and six Improved cassava cultivars produced in two different ecosystems were assessed for their biochemical components over a period of 2 years. Cassava leaves were a good source of vitamin C. For the tubers, some local varieties compared favourably with the recommended improved cultivars in terms of dry matter and starch yield and had low fibre content. There was a substantial variation in cyanide levels between the two years. Varieties should not be selected on the basis of cyanide levels in a single year. Some local varieties have desirable attributes which could be used in cassava breeding programmes.
