The effect of wood-smoking and sun-drying on seedborne pathogens and seed viability in tomato, okra and pepper (Capsicum annuum) for subsequent year cultivation was studied. Fruits were collected from 3 locations in Uyo municipality, Nigeria, and seeds were extracted. Smoking significantly reduced seed infection, while sun-drying had much less effect. The survival rates of seedborne microorganisms were generally higher in sun-dried than in smoked seeds. Cercospora sp. (leaf spot pathogen) was the most resistant organism to both treatments, while Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata] and Fusarium solani showed varying degrees of survival in smoked okra and pepper seeds, respectively. The germination rate and time were not significantly affected by the preservation technique for up to 3 months, but they were affected by longer storage. It is concluded that wood-smoking was a useful preservative for storage for 2 months, but sun-drying was better over longer periods.
