It is noted that subsistence farmers continue to farm even though gross margin (GM) calculations show that they are always losing money, because they are not farming to make profit but to maximize savings on food expenditure (SFE). Using data on pearl millet in northern Namibia, calculations showed that the value to cost ratios from SFE were higher than those from GM, implying that investment in the selected technologies would be more attractive under subsistence production than under commercial farming. This demonstrated the good economic sense of subsistence farming and underlined the importance of not trying to change the farmers' target.
