Assessment of pineapple plants developed from micropropagation instead of conventional suckering

Rapid in vitro multiplication of pineapple by culture establishment, shoot multiplication and rooting of plantlets has been developed. Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 50 mg/l adenine hemisulphite, 3 percent sucrose, 10 percent coconut water, 2 mg/l naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and 0.5 mg/l 6-benzyl amino purine (BAP) gave the most (76 percent) axenic bud cultures which sprouted within 20-25 days. MS with 3.2 mg/l BAP and 0.25 mg/l NAA gave most lateral shoots per month at the 4th stage, which was found to decline to 4. I thereafter. Tufts of shoots when separated into indivIduals rooted best on half strength MS with 2 percent sucrose and 1 mg/l each of indole butyric acid and NAA. Around 88 percent of the rooted plants became established in the field, where micropropagated plants performed as well as conventional suckers with no somaclonal variation. The micropropagated plantlets took more time to flowering and harvesting but they flowered well. The quality of the fruits from the micropropagated plants was comparable with those from suckers.
