The side effects of five insecticides commonly used against the cotton whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, were evaluated on the abundance in the field in Sudan of all immature stages of the lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea. Amitraz, chlorfenvinphos and chlorpyrifos significantly reduced the whitefly population while being harmless to the predator, and they gave higher yields of cotton. Quinalphos and fenpropathrin/fenitrothion adversely affected the predator population.
