Six tef genotypes of different drought response were subjected to three moisture stress treatments (early stress, terminal stress and well watered) in a field study on sandy clay loam soil in Ethiopia in the 1995/96 off season. Grain and biomass yields were significantly reduced by the early and terminal stress treatments with the effect being greater in the former. In both treatments grain yield was highest in DZ-Cr-37, DZ-01-1015 and DZ-Cr-358 and lowest in Trotteriana. Drought sensitivity (DS) was greater for early than for terminal stress and it was significantly different among the cultivars. Harvest index was more severely affected by terminal than early stress, and the variation among the genotypes did not follow the order of the drought response. All yield components were significantly reduced by early stress, except 100-seed weight, which was severely reduced by the terminal stress only. DS was negatively and significantly correlated with both grain and biomass yields in early and terminal stress, and with all yield components except 100-seed weight in early stress. None of the yield components was significantly associated with DS under terminal stress.
