Six tef genotypes with different drought tolerances were subjected to early or late water stress. Early stress significantly reduced plant height and increased the average time to heading and maturity, while late stress decreased the time to maturity. Under water stress, the drought-tolerant genotypes (DZ-01-1015 and DZ-Cr-37) had the lowest excised-leaf water loss (ELWL) and relative growth rate (RGR), while under optimum moisture conditions they had the highest RGR and intermediate ELWL. The RGRof the drought-sensitive cv. Trotteriana was intermediate, while its ELWL was significantly higher than for the other genotypes at all stages of growth. RGR was not correlated with grain yield but it was significantly correlated with the drought susceptibility index (DSI) at the jointing and heading stages under early stress. ELWL was negatively and significantly correlated with grain yield at heading and grain filling under early stress. It was also positively and significantly correlated with DSI bothat jointing and heading under early stress and at heading under late stress.
